The Brothers Brick LEGO Creation of the Year 2024 [News]
Last week, we introduced our shortlist of 10 creations that were in the running to earn a coveted title: that of our favourite LEGO creation of the year. Narrowing it down to that list was hard enough – there is so much talent in the LEGO community! Over the past week, we’ve had the unenviable task of picking out a winner. In our round-up of the TBB readers’ (hey! That’s you!) favourite LEGO moments of 2024, we were struck by how many people had listed conventions as their highlight of the year. After all, that is the best place for community – and to see jaw-dropping builds in person. Our winner this year is one such build, one that made a real impression on us both in the brick and online. It’s epic in size and scale, being made up of nearly 7,000 pieces. It’s wonderfully sculpted, with an entirely brick-built inner frame. And all that in an incredibly limited colour palette: gold!
And after all, it is the year of the dragon. Donny Chen‘s Golden Dragon is The Brothers Brick LEGO Creation of the Year 2024!
Donny started work on his masterpiece shortly after the 2023 edition of Brickvention, which takes place in Melbourne, Australia. A year in the making, it was ready in time for Brickvention 2024 (after which we caught wind of it and featured it). It looks stunning as it is, but we’re reliably informed by our visual assets whiz Kimberly Giffen that “photos do not do it justice”!
The stats behind it are fascinating: over 2 metres long at full extension; between 6,500 and 7,000 pieces; and of those, over 1,300 are individual golden scales. And the gold is what makes this dragon really special. Such impressive shaping and sculpting would have been enough to get onto our shortlist in the first place. But there aren’t a huge amount of golden LEGO pieces to choose from, so accomplishing all this in that colour is an incredible feat. The head in particular is jaw-dropping!
But we’re not the only ones to have recognized Donny’s skill with the brick. At the LEGO House in LEGO’s hometown of Billund, Denmark, the Masterpiece Gallery showcases the best of what the LEGO community has to offer. And this golden dragon is currently one of those builds, on display alongside some of Donny’s other builds until next September!
